THE STORY
The console was built around the Emotion Engine processor, co-developed with Toshiba, and the Graphics Synthesizer GPU. It could play DVD movies as well as games on DVD-ROM and CD-ROM, and it ran almost all original PlayStation games by including the earlier console's processor as its I/O chip. A smaller 'Slimline' model followed in 2004, and the library grew to more than 4,000 titles with 1.54 billion copies sold.
With 160 million units sold, the PlayStation 2 is the best-selling video game console of all time. It stayed in production well after the PlayStation 3 arrived in 2006 and was discontinued on January 4, 2013, one of the longest lifespans of any console; the last new game, Pro Evolution Soccer 2014, was released in Europe in November 2013.
