SNK's Neo Geo is a cartridge-based platform introduced in Japan in April 1990 in two forms: the MVS (Multi Video System) arcade hardware, whose cabinets take one, two, four or six game cartridges, and the AES (Advanced Entertainment System) home console. Both run identical code, so home players received the arcade games unchanged, although the arcade and home cartridges are physically different and not interchangeable.

THE STORY
The AES was first offered for rent in Japan and only later sold at retail, launching in the United States at US$649.99, which kept it a niche product. The MVS, by contrast, suited arcade operators thanks to its low cost, compact size and swappable cartridges, and it carried series such as Fatal Fury, Art of Fighting, Samurai Shodown, The King of Fighters and Metal Slug.About one million MVS and 410,000 AES units were sold, and the AES has since become a collector's item.
