MSX is a standardized home computer architecture announced by ASCII Corporation in June 1983. Conceived with Microsoft, it aimed to give competing manufacturers a common platform in the way VHS had unified video recorders: any hardware or software bearing the MSX logo was meant to work with products from other makers. The first MSX machine sold to the public, Mitsubishi's ML-8000, went on sale on October 21, 1983.

THE STORY

About the MSX

The first-generation standard combines off-the-shelf parts: a Zilog Z80A at 3.58 MHz, a Texas Instruments TMS9918-family video chip with 16 KB of VRAM (256 × 192 pixels, 15 colors and 32 sprites), a General Instrument AY-3-8910 sound chip and MSX BASIC in ROM. MSX2 (1985) introduced the Yamaha V9938 with up to 128 KB of VRAM and 256-color modes, followed by MSX2+ (1988) and MSX turbo R (1990), both released officially only in Japan.

MSX was most popular in Japan, South Korea, Argentina and Brazil, and also did well in the Netherlands and Spain. Before the Famicom's success it was a key platform for Japanese studios such as Konami and Hudson Soft, and the first two Metal Gear games were originally released for MSX hardware.

  • Any MSX cartridge or MSX-branded product was designed to work on any MSX computer.
  • MSX1 video: 256 × 192 pixels, 15 colors plus transparent and 32 hardware sprites (4 per line).
  • The first two Metal Gear games were originally released for MSX hardware.
  • MSX2 (1985) added the Yamaha V9938 with 128 KB of VRAM and bitmap modes up to 512 × 212.
  • A Sony MSX2 machine was sent to the Mir space station.
