120 OpenBOR games, all playable free in your browser.
OpenBOR is a royalty-free, open-source engine for sprite-based side-scrolling games, optimized for beat 'em ups. It grew out of Beats of Rage, a fan-made tribute to Sega's Streets of Rage that Senile Team released in November 2003 using characters from SNK's The King of Fighters series. Because the game's assets and engine were modular, players soon built their own modules, and developer Kirby2000 obtained Senile Team's source code and permission to continue the engine as OpenBOR.

UNDER THE HOOD
THE STORY
Development passed through a loose group of contributors before being organized as the OpenBOR Team in 2006. Damon Caskey (DCurrent) has led the project since 2011 and moved it from SourceForge to GitHub in 2017. Compared with Beats of Rage, the engine removes many numerical limits, adds high-definition graphics support and a C-based scripting engine, and still runs most modules made for the original.
OpenBOR is distributed under a BSD-style license that allows authors to sell their games. Current builds target Windows, Linux, macOS and Android; the first official 4.0 build was released in 2024, and the community is based at the ChronoCrash website.
